Karastan Rugs

Armenia-Originated Rugs

The unity, brightness and vividness of Armenian culture strikes nearly everyone, who visit the country for the first time and sees the oriental beauty with his/her own eyes.
Karastan rugs are proud to be among the greatest creations made by Armenian nation. Karastan is translated as “stone country”, but it doesn’t mean that art and folks craft is made in gray and cold colors. In reality though, Karastan rugs are, on the contrary, full of bright colours, vividness, brightness and imagination.
If you’ve ever seen Armenia and its nature, you would have found that there are lots of stones in the country. This is one of the reasons why Armenia is called Karastan - the country of stones. In folks craft and art, Armenian carpet weavers tried to reflect the world that surrounded them. Karastan rugs are a wonderful creation that displays the evolution of the nation and the history of this ancient country.
Handmade craft of braiding and carpet weaving of Karastan rugs in Armenia is known from times immemorial. The making of pile carpets was spread around the whole territory of the country, but the main its Karastan rugs’ centres have always been – Leninakansky, Stepanovsky, Igevansky, Sevansky, Yerevan, Zangezursky regions.
The main feature characterizing Karastan rugs is a geometrized plant ornament that combines flower motives, animals and birds images, and many other vivid things. According to the complicity and ornamentation interweaving, the coherency of colours decision in Karastan rugs can be indeed called enigmatic and fantastic. Karastan rugs are a mirror and in some way a reflection of creativeness and fantasy of weaving art masters in many generations.
